A “La Fonda” side chair designed in collaboration with the Eames Office and Alexander Girard. This style chair was designed for the La Fonda del Sol restaurant, which was designed by Alexander Girard. The restaurant opened in 1961 in New York City’s Time & Life Building. The La Fonda side and arm chair, manufactured by the Herman Miller Furniture Company for the restaurant and later added to its product line, were made of reinforced fiberglass and were molded in shipes similar to those of the 1951 plastic armchairs and side chairs. Girard specified that the back of the dining chair not be visible above the tabletops, so the shell was lowered to comply with his request. For the restaurant chairs, the four-columned aluminum pedestal base, elliptical in cross-section and attached to the seat with rubber shock mounts, was cast in two pieces bolted together at the bottom.
This chair has a white fiberglass shell and a dark gray aluminum base. The chair is 28 7/8 inches tall, 18 1/2 inches wide, 20 1/2 inches deep and the seat height is 18 inches high.
