Vintage Design
Gerrit Rietveld (1888 – 1964) was a Dutch carpenter, architect and designer. He became known for his participation in the artist group De Stijl. Rietveld’s “Red Blue Chair” from 1918 is considered one of the most famous design icons and is represented in many design museums today. Another milestone in design history is the “Crate Chair”. Gerrit Rietveld designed the idiosyncratic armchair in 1934 as an inexpensive alternative to expensive furniture during the economic crisis of the time. Originally, the armchair was produced from wood scraps from packing crates and offered inexpensively as a kit for self-assembly. Our copy comes from an unknown Dutch production, probably from the 1950s / 60s. The armchair is in absolute original condition, built of solid larch wood. Good substance, stable. Seat height about 24cm.
