Vintage Design

Rare desk which is an early design by Michel Ducaroy for SNA Roset, France 1950. SNA Roset, later became Ligne Roset. The desk is made from solid mahogany with a rich warm red/brown hue. The desk is set up as following. Standing on four slightly tapered feet, the desk has a wide first top with a golden webbing. The second top is made of glass and provides a nice contrast to the mahogany base. A fun feature is the overhanging section on the right side of the desk that offers extra space for books or small items. The upward-facing side makes it a nice and playful design. The glass top is secured by small brass clamps at the corners. Brass screws are subtly visible in multiple places and are a beautiful detail. with its small size this desk is ideal for various settings, from home offices to hallways. The desk is in excellent condition. The chair on the pictures is not included in this listing. Michel Ducaroy was born in 1925, into a family of designers and furniture makers whose activities were split between private houses and larger-scale contracts (liners, exhibitions, official buildings). Drawing from his background he trained at the Ecole Nationale des Beaux Arts in Lyon, and in the family business, before branching out alone as an independent designer in 1952. Since his first contact with the Roset company in 1954, Michel Ducaroy has rapidly become one of their most integral designers. In the early days of Ligne Roset he was by far one of the company’s key attributes in pushing the technological boundaries. In 1968 he designed one of the first modular all-foam chairs, the low-sitting Adria, and then amongst others Kashima and Safi, which had large cushions on a frame of altuglass. It was in 1973, that he designed the now iconic Togo.

A stylish and very comfortable vintage French satin wood sofa. This was recently imported from France, it dates from the 1950-60’s.

This is extremely well made, the quality is outstanding. The frame is well sprung and generous to relax in, the satin wood arms and legs have a gorgeous colour tone complimented by the brass capped feet.

We have had the wood stripped and re-polished to a very high standard, the frames have been fully re-upholstered in a cream boucle fabric. The condition is superb throughout. We also have the matching pair of armchairs that came with this, seen listed under our other items for sale.

Vintage Design

Stunning cubic lounge sofa known as ‘Artona,’ designed by the talented Italian duo, Afra and Tobia Scarpa for Maxalto in 1975. This sofa shows exceptional craftsmanship, with a particular highlight on the woodworking. The walnut wood used is beautifully inlaid with dark wood lines, creating a stunning graphic appearance. This effect is most prominent in the curved backrest, where the dark lines beautifully enrich the design. Very comfortable lage lounge sofa, where the fabric adds a nice and warm touch. The ‘Artona’ line, designed by the Scarpa duo, holds historical significance as it marked the beginning of Maxalto, a specialized branch of B&B Italia. Maxalto, founded in 1975, was dedicated to crafting artisanal, predominantly wooden furniture. The ‘Artona’ series was their first project for Maxalto and also served as a counterpoint to the prevailing trend of using plastics in furniture design during the postwar era. This set is newly upholstered in a linen like fabric which feel very nice and soft. Kindly note that the lounge chairs are not a part of this listing, they can be purchased here. Afra and Tobia Scarpa are award winning postmodern Italian architects and designers. Their pieces can be found in museums across the United States and Europe, including collections in MoMa and the Louvre Museum. They have collaborated with companies such as B&B Italia, San Lorenzo Silver, Molteni, and Knoll International. They have won a number of awards such as the Compasso d’Oro in 1969 to the International Forum Design in 1992. Their design work consists of architecture and everyday household items including, furniture, clothing, interior design, art glass. They focused on the technical and aesthetic possibilities of materials in their designs. The couple was greatly influenced by Tobia’s father, Carlo Scarpa, a Venetian architect and designer.
