Vintage Design
Wonderful and iconic M1T70 Carrara marble dining table designed by Angelo Mangiarotti and manufactured by Skipper in Italy in 1969. The M table is a significant piece in Angelo Mangiarotti’s work because it’s the first time he used marble to create furniture for homes. This table might seem simple, but it combines various design elements that Mangiarotti had explored in his previous projects. On one side, it draws inspiration from his CAP59 vases, featuring circles, hyperboloids, and lathing. On the other side, it’s like a geometric evolution of his SK207, but this time, it’s entirely made of marble. What makes the M table even more remarkable is its single gravity joint, which connects the top to the base. The tabletop is newly polished. This design marks the beginning of a journey that leads to four other masterpieces: Eros, Incas, Asolo, and More. Mangiarotti’s interest in this kind of rotational structure is closely related to his architectural work. For instance, the “Casa Tre Cilindri” (Three Cylinder House) in Milan, built between 1959 and 1962, features three towers connected by a central volume for vertical movement. It’s a structural engineering marvel with its central load-bearing structure that allows flexible layouts for each apartment. Even renowned architect Richard Neutra couldn’t resist admiring it during his visits to Italy. In summary, the M table is an all-marble beauty with a central stand that’s shaped like a hyperboloid, wider at the base and narrower at the top. This unique design allows the circular tabletop to sit snugly in the thickness of the top, creating a seamless and elegant piece of furniture.
