Encyclopedia Britannica 11th Edition 29 Volumes, 1910–11, Cambridge UK ~ Complete Set (with Index)
Here is a complete set of the much-treasured 11th Edition of the Encyclopedia Britannica, bound in dark green with gold lettering, published 1910 at the Cambridge University Press of Cambridge, England, and in New York. The copyright page states: “Copyright | in all countries subscribing to the | Bern Convention | by | The Chancellor, Masters and Scholars | of the | University of Cambridge | All rights reserved.” There is a second copyright for the USA, 1911.
This is a good set, with a few condition problems. All 29 volumes (including the index) are included. There is one cover that has a torn area that was patched with black tape (I didn’t mess with it, so don’t know the extent of the damage, see closeup photo). There is also some white splotches on several covers, where it looks like paint was dripped and then wiped off. The binding is beginning to crack at the inside seams on some of the volumes, but all the covers are still attached (none have completely loosened). I found one torn-out missing page, the copyright page in volume 28. Otherwise, pages seem intact, with little wear or discoloration; even the color plates are still nicely crisp.
Why is the 11th edition so special?
From the Britannica website: “The 11th edition, in 29 slim volumes printed on India paper, was published by the Cambridge University Press (1910–11).” Bauman’s Rare Books website quotes the Britannica history: “This edition marked a departure from previous editions in splitting up the traditional lengthy, comprehensive treatises into somewhat more particularized articles. As a result the11th edition had 40,000 articles—more than double the ninth edition’s 17,000… In addition there were many new entries, as well as new sections to earlier entries which covered history in greater detail. The rich, leisurely prose of the 11th edition marked the pinnacle of literary style in the Britannica” (Britannica).
This is obviously a very heavy set (approximately 100 pounds). I plan to provide US shipping via UPS Ground (with insurance), included in the cost, unless you would like to request another method.
